Composition and form of release

Tetracycline is manufactured in tablets, capsules and ointments for topical application. The active component of the drug is tetracycline hydrochloride.

Indications

Tetracycline is used in the treatment of inflammatory and infectious diseases caused by the microflora sensitive to tetracycline, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, angina, pleural empyema, cholecystitis, pyelonephritis, intestinal infection, endometritis, endocarditis, syphilis, prostatitis, brucellosis, gonorrhea, purulent soft tissue infections, rickettsiosis, trachoma, osteomyelitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, acne.

In addition, the drug is used to prevent the development of postoperative infectious complications.

Contraindications

Tetracycline is not prescribed to patients who have been found to be hypersensitive to tetracycline hydrochloride and related antibiotics. The drug is not used in the treatment of fungal infections and it is not prescribed for pregnant and nursing women.

  • Special care should be taken when prescribing the drug to patients who have kidney failure, leukopenia and a history of allergic reactions.
  • Due to the fact that recently widespread strains resistant to tetracycline, the drug is used very rarely.
  • Tetracycline is not used for the treatment of children under 8 years of age, as it can cause irreversible changes in the color of tooth enamel.
  • When taking Tetracycline for the prevention of hypovitaminosis, patients should take vitamins of groups K and B.

During treatment with Tetracycline, the patient should refrain from using dairy products, since they prevent the absorption of the antibiotic.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Due to the fact that tetracycline hydrochloride can penetrate the placental barrier and cause hypoplasia of tooth enamel, inhibit the growth of fetal skeleton bones and change the color of teeth for a long time and cause the development of fatty infiltration of liver tissue, the use of Tetracycline in the treatment of women at the stage of lactation and pregnancy is impossible.

Dosage and administration

Tetracycline is taken orally at 250 or 500 mg every 6 hours. The highest daily dose for adults is 4 g. Children who are 8 years old are prescribed 25 or 50 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours.

When using the drug in the form of an ointment, it is applied in a thin layer to the affected area of the skin from 3 to 5 times a day. If necessary, it is possible to apply ointment under a weak bandage.

Overdose

When taking Tetracycline orally in high doses, patients experience increased side effects. With local application of the drug, overdose is impossible.

Side effect

In some patients, when taking Tetracycline, there is the development of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, anorexia, stool disorders, dry mouth, glossitis, esophagitis, changes in the color of teeth and tongue, increased activity of liver enzymes, dizziness, headaches, anemia, photosensitization and allergic reactions.
